Building Wealth in the Bull City: Jonathan Edwards Returns to NCCU to Talk Homeownership
At Hillman Real Estate Group, we believe that real estate is about more than just transactions—it’s about “pouring into” the communities we serve. This month, our very own Jonathan Edwards, REALTOR®, did exactly that by returning to his old stomping grounds at North Carolina Central University (NCCU).
Jonathan was invited to speak at the NCCU School of Business during their traditional 10:40 Break, a storied time on “The Yard” where students, alumni, and community members connect.
The “10:40 Tea” with the Department of Hospitality and Tourism
Hosting the event was the NCCU Department of Hospitality and Tourism, led by Department Chair Dr. Berkita Bradford. The session, titled “10:40 Tea,” wasn’t about gossip—it was about “spilling the tea” on the real-world financial strategies students need to succeed after graduation.
“My first two years of college were at Central,” Jonathan shared. “Being back on campus and seeing the energy of these future leaders was incredible. It felt great to give back to the place that helped shape my own journey.”
Demystifying the Path to Homeownership
For many college students, the idea of buying a home feels like a distant “someday” dream. Jonathan’s mission was to show these students that with the right strategy, homeownership is a practical reality.
During the engaging session, Jonathan and the students dove deep into:
- Credit Power: Understanding how credit scores impact buying power and how to start building a healthy profile now.
- Debt Management: Navigating student loans and budgeting to ensure financial freedom post-graduation.
- The Home Buying Process: A step-by-step look at everything from the initial pre-approval to the excitement of closing day.
- Down Payment Assistance: Highlighting resources and grants available specifically for first-time buyers in North Carolina.
- Strategic Wealth: How careers in hospitality and business can align with long-term financial goals like building generational wealth through real estate.
Why This Matters for Durham
As Durham continues to grow, HREG is committed to ensuring that the next generation of professionals, especially our NCCU Eagles, have the tools they need to plant roots in the Bull City. Homeownership is one of the most effective ways to build stability and long-term net worth, and it starts with the conversations happening right now in the classroom.
Eagle Pride is Soaring!
We want to extend a massive thank you to Dr. Berkita Bradford and the entire NCCU School of Business for having us.
