Historic Oakwood

Welcome to Historic Oakwood, North Carolina’s largest intact 19th-century residential neighborhood, located minutes from downtown Raleigh. The neighborhood is comprised of hundreds of homes in a variety of architectural styles, many of them being lovingly-restored Victorian and early 20th-century homes.

Small grocers and food shops are walking distance away, or, for a more extensive selection, you can easily drive or take a bus to Food Lion or Harris Teeter. With Downtown Raleigh just a quick stroll away, residents have easy access to a variety of restaurants, coffee shops, and bars. The area is also home to a community library, a park, two universities, multiple fitness centers and yoga studios, art shops, bookstores, and numerous other services. Nearby bus stops connect to the 1, 2, 3, 10, 12, and 15 lines, allowing you to travel throughout the city even if you don’t have a car.

The neighborhood borders the Historic Oakwood Cemetery, which contains graves dating back to 1869. It is also less than three blocks from the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and the North Carolina Museum. Moore Square is just a few blocks away and is home to a number of the city’s most important and cultural and social events, including Artsplosure and the Raleigh Arts Festival. Oakwood is also in close proximity to the North Carolina State Capitol, and The Governor’s Mansion.

Nearby you will find Partnership Elementary School, Wiley Magnet Elementary School, Moore Square Magnet Middle School, and Mary E. Phillips High School.

Traveling Back in Time

Walking through Oakwood can be like taking a step back in time and The Society for the Preservation of Historic Oakwood does a great job keeping Historic Oakwood historic. The neighborhood and many of its restored homes are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Society hosts a wide range of events including a Historic Oakwood Candlelight Tour and a Garden Tour & Tea. These events are open to the public.

There are also lots of residents’ only neighborhood gatherings including a Samedi Gras Celebration, Easter Egg Hunt, Spring Jazz Supper, July 4th Block Party, Fall Pig Pickin’, and more!
